Over the past 50 years, any Southsider who owned a hot rod, racecar or even backyard wannabe’s who busted knuckles working on their cars visited Gunderman Speed Shop at least once.
The speed shop opened on the Southside in 1969 as an after-market automotive dealer for performance and race engines, parts, equipment and accessories for cars and trucks. The unique speed shop was founded by Bob Gunderman, who had worked as an engineer for Chrysler Corp. in Indianapolis and as a manufacturer’s rep for Hydromation.
Gunderman served the high-performance and automotive community for 25 years. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War, a Master Mason, and member of the Indianapolis Scottish Rite and the Shriners Horse Patrol. He retired in 1992 and died in 2005. Gunderman’s sons, Scott and John Gunderman recently organized a free public gathering and car show at Lucas Oil Raceway in Brownsburg to celebrate 50 years of Gunderman’s shops in Indianapolis and to thank all the gearheads they’ve proudly served over the years.
Despite the searing heat, there was a fantastic turnout of vintage, restored and customized hot rods and racecars proudly on display. Prizes and gifts were awarded to most patrons and friends of the Gundermans at the car show. There were all kinds of prizes and gifts awarded to almost every-one in attendance along with great story-tellin’ amongst friends, old and new.
